STATUS
In the Versailles neighborhood of Brussels, a social housing complex from the 1970s currently features an underground parking, nested between two of the buildings, with its roof serving as a public open space.
Replacing the former parking, a new civic building will bring together a sports hall, childcare center, youth and community support services within a compact, five-level structure.
Around it, the landscape is conceived as a shared ground where water, vegetation and circulation are closely interrelated. Each side of the building defines a specific relationship to its context.
A generous parvis along Rue de Beyseghem mirrors the square footprint of the building, extending over the street to signal the public character of this urban space which until now had been devoted only to vehicle circulation.
On the opposite side, an intimate courtyard brings light to the dojo and boxing ring, while a series of planted steps bridges the height difference, buffers rainwater and creates a visual filter between the gym and the park.
On the east side of the building, an organic path connects the site to the broader network of public spaces, meandering through the park to provide enough space for native plants to develop alongside it and reclaim the former parking site.
