STATUS

The Villas de Ganshoren district lies at the edge of Brussels, between the open landscapes of the Molenbeek valley and the urban fabric of the seconde couronne. Within a landscape shaped by agricultural and pastoral systems, the site still shows traces of these rural geographies underneath decades of urbanisation.
Initially imagined as a garden-city, it later evolved into a modernist ensemble of housing towers set within a large open ground. Over time, the park became the unifying structure of the site, hosting housing and public equipment.

Reinterpreting this landscape by working on the ground as a continuous and shared support, four main figures structure the project: a civic axis following the vernacular path, a green corridor and mobility connector along the main avenues, a continuous planted core, and redefined ground-level spaces around the housing towers.

Rather than adding new elements, the intervention is based on subtraction and reuse. Surface parking is reorganised, freeing space for pedestrian movement and safer, more continuous public spaces. Hardscape is reduced, soil permeability is restored, and existing materials are reused on site. Meadows, wetlands, and trees replace underused lawns, reinforcing biodiversity while allowing flexible everyday uses.

Rainwater is collected, slowed down, and infiltrated through a network of swales, depressions, and planted areas, reconnecting the site to its underlying hydrological system and increasing its resilience to climate change.

At the base of the towers, public spaces are reorganised around clear paths, entrances, and shared uses. A continuous running loop crosses the site, connecting its different parts and bringing regular activity to underused areas. On the slabs above underground parking, kitchen gardens and productive plots are introduced, offering shared spaces for cultivation and community making.
